Great wine thanks to mother nature

The Pfitscher family produces high-quality wines with a mindfulness for the environment

Humans survive off nature. This notion is just as important for a winery as it is for a company that is involved in photovoltaics. When humans and nature work together, something positive comes out of it. The Pfitscher family has been making wine in South Tyrol, Italy for almost 160 years. They produce their high-quality wines in a sustainable way. Their winery is the first in Italy to receive KlimaHaus (CasaClima) certification. This means the Pfitschers’ winery meets numerous requirements for environmental protection and climate-friendliness. For them, solar power is a no-brainer. The Pfitscher winery uses the Solar-Log™ with power consumption meters.

The winery is spectacularly located in the middle of the vineyard. It is nestled into nature as if it has always been there. Environmentally constructed and operated. Three generations have been producing sustainable wine on these 17 hectares (42 acres). They produce more than 100,000 bottles of wine every year.

About 10 years ago, Monika and Klaus Pfitscher made a landmark decision about adding a new building. The wine cellar in the village became too small so they moved it to the vineyard. The new building meets numerous requirements for environmentally friendly construction. They also practice sustainability in their daily life. They have environmentally friendly power generation from a photovoltaic plant and efficient energy management thanks to Solar-Log™. Rainwater is collected and pesticides used only minimally. Wine bottles are packed in reusable cardboard and the labels are made from certified recycled paper. This environmentally conscious behavior "has many advantages" says Daniel Pfitscher – including an economic standpoint.

Climate change has already arrived in Northern Italy and poses very special challenges for wine makers. Not only is nature beginning to change but the character of the wine is also changing. Daniel Pfitscher reports that wine becomes increasingly opulent, denser and has a higher alcohol content. "Those are not the characteristics that helped wine become well-established here," laments the 28-year old. There is a "major trend to go to higher elevation" due to climate change in order to avoid the heat. Meanwhile, many wine makers cultivate their wine at 900 meters or higher. "We have been lucky to have most of our wine grow above 500 meters." This has now become an advantage.

People are clever in South Tyrol, which is why PV plays an important role here. Forty percent of their energy consumption today already comes from renewable sources. People from South Tyrol recognized the importance of living in a resource-efficient way.
